Assistive Technology for Older Adults
Your Independence, Your Dignity, Your Life
Our dedicated team at the Michigan Assistive Technology Program believes that aging should not mean giving up independence, dignity, or access to the activities that bring meaning to life. Through assistive technology designed for older adults, we're helping individuals maintain autonomy, stay connected with loved ones, and continue participating in the activities that matter most.
"Assistive technology can be the difference between aging in place or moving to more restricted living environments. It's amazing to see the relief and joy when someone discovers they can continue living independently with the right tools." - MATP Specialist
What is Assistive Technology for Older Adults?
Assistive Technology for older adults includes any device, tool, or system that helps maintain or enhance independence, safety, connection, and quality of life as we age. These technologies range from simple, low-tech solutions to sophisticated smart home systems, all designed to address the natural changes that may come with aging while supporting continued participation in daily activities and community life.
How We Fill the Gap
We recognize that many older adults face barriers to accessing the tools that could help them maintain independence:
- Many don't realize what assistive technology options are available or how these tools could benefit them
- There may be concerns about cost or complexity of technology
- Healthcare providers may not be familiar with the full range of available solutions
- There are few opportunities to try different options before purchasing
Our program helps bridge these gaps by providing free demonstrations and loans of assistive technology, bringing the equipment directly to seniors in their homes or communities. We focus on practical, user-friendly solutions that address real-life challenges and can be customized to individual needs and preferences.

Examples of Assistive Technology for Older Adults
Our inventory includes a wide range of solutions designed specifically for the needs of older adults:

HandyBar
The HandyBar is a portable support handle that locks into the U-shaped door latch of a car, providing a sturdy, non-slip grip for easy entry and exit. It’s ideal for individuals with limited mobility, arthritis, or balance issues, as it reduces the risk of falls and increases confidence when traveling. Lightweight and easy to use, it’s a simple tool that promotes independence and safety on the go.

Mighty Mack Rollator
The Mighty Mack Rollator provides exceptional stability and confidence for individuals or those needing extra support. With its reinforced frame, oversized seat, and easy-to-use hand brakes, it promotes safe mobility and independence both indoors and outdoors. For those who need reliable, heavy-duty support, the Mighty Mack ensures they can stay active, social, and engaged in their communities.

Medication Reminder
The MedCenter System uses a color-coded pill organizer and a talking alarm to remind users when it’s time to take their medication, helping to prevent missed or double doses. By promoting consistency and independence, this system provides peace of mind to both users and caregivers, allowing loved ones to stay healthy and confident at home.
Success Stories
Margaret, 78, was referred to MATP by her local Area Agency on Aging. Following a mild stroke, she was struggling with activities she had previously managed independently. She was determined to stay in her own home but needed some support to do so safely.
MATP visited Margaret at home and demonstrated several assistive technologies that could help with her specific challenges. She tried a jar opener for her arthritis-affected hands, a reaching tool to help pick things up without bending, and a shower chair with grab bars to make bathing safer.
Margaret also tested a smart speaker with voice control, which allowed her to make calls, set medication reminders, and control lights without having to get up or use her hands. She was initially hesitant about the technology but was surprised by how intuitive it was to use.
After trying these devices on loan for a few weeks, Margaret reported feeling much more confident in her ability to live independently. The smart speaker particularly delighted her as she could now easily call her grandchildren without struggling with small buttons on her phone. Her family noticed that she seemed less anxious and more engaged during their visits.
With information from MATP about funding options, Margaret was able to purchase the devices she found most helpful. Six months later, she continues to live independently in her home and has even begun teaching her friends about assistive technology.
