Assistive Technology for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)

Your Voice, Your Rights, Your Communication

Our dedicated team at the Michigan Assistive Technology Program believes that communication is a fundamental human right. Through augmentative and alternative communication technologies, we're empowering individuals to express themselves, make choices, and participate fully in conversations, relationships, and community life.

"I am passionate about fostering awareness, understanding, and celebration of the many diverse, valid, and beautiful ways people communicate." - Caitlin, MATP Specialist

What is Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)?

Every human has the right to autonomous communication, which Gayle Porter defined as, "Being able to say what I want to say, to whoever I want to say it to, whenever I want to say it, however I choose to say it."

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) includes all the ways, methods, and modalities that people communicate other than speech. AAC supports can range from no-tech strategies to high-tech speech-generating devices, all designed to enhance communication abilities and provide alternative pathways to expression.

How We Fill the Gap

Our AAC program addresses critical gaps in access to communication tools:

  • We provide AAC loans for AAC trials and to fill "wait time" while an individual is waiting for their insurance funded device.
  • We are working on solutions for young adults graduating from post secondary programming who are losing access to their school funded AT, including AAC.
  • We can provide lite tech communication boards to support short term communication needs (e.g., while in the hospital) and backup communication needs (e.g., high tech device needs repair, isn't accessible for the activity).
  • We can link you to tons of information about AAC and resources for continued learning.

We believe that everyone deserves access to the tools they need to communicate effectively, without gaps or interruptions in service that could impede development or participation.

Why AAC AT Matters

Communication is essential for:

  • Expressing needs, wants, and preferences
  • Building and maintaining relationships
  • Participating in education and employment
  • Making medical and personal decisions
  • Expressing personality and humor
  • Contributing to community and family life
  • Developing literacy and language skills
  • Maintaining dignity and autonomy

Examples of AAC Technology

Our inventory includes a wide range of AAC solutions:

orange and white triangle switch

Switches

MATP has a variety of switches. The one featured here is the Candy Corn Switch, which is a proximity switch that activates when a user's hand or object comes within range, requiring no physical pressure or contact. This makes it perfect for individuals who benefit from touch-free activation or prefer proximity-based access methods. When paired with AAC devices, communication apps, or speech-generating software, it provides an accessible way to select messages, navigate menus, or activate voice output, giving users more independence and control over their communication.

Apps

AAC apps transform tablets and smartphones into powerful communication devices, offering customizable vocabulary, voice output, and symbol-based messaging. MATP has popular apps like Proloquo2Go, TouchChat, GoTalk NOW, LAMP:WORDSforLIFE, and many more that offer users thousands of words, phrases, and symbols that can be personalized to meet individual needs and interests. These apps create opportunities for people who are non-speaking or have communication differences to express themselves, participate in conversations, and connect with others, making communication portable, and accessible anywhere.

Mounts

MATP has a variety of mounts in our inventory. Featured is a modular hose tablet holder that allows users to mount tablets at the perfect angle and height for their needs. Whether used in bed, at a desk, or in a wheelchair, this adjustable mount brings AAC apps, communication software, and entertainment within easy reach. Its bendable arms and stable clamp make it ideal for users with limited mobility or positioning needs, ensuring comfortable access to communication tools throughout the day.

Success Stories

Mateo's Communication Bridge
MATP connected with Mateo through his speech language therapist at a West Michigan therapy practice. Mateo had already completed an AAC trial with a loaner device from an AAC and found that it worked really well to support his needs. Unfortunately, at the end of the trial period, he had to return the trial device and go without access to his preferred communication modality while his insurance company was processing the request.

MATP demonstrated as similar an AAC system set up as possible for him that he used while he waited for his insurance-funded AAC to come in. Mateo ended up waiting for months for his insurance to come through, but didn't have to go without the ability to communicate how he wanted to while he waited. He now has his very own, insurance-funded AAC and didn't have to lose access to his voice or the opportunity to grow his communication skills in the meantime.

Janie's Stylus Solution
MATP was contacted by a speech language therapist at a private practice who was looking for assistive technology options to support their client, Janie, a child with a limb difference, with access to her AAC system using direct selection. MATP brought a variety of stylus and grip options for Janie to learn about and test out.

Janie's interest in the stylus options and enjoyment of the demonstration was so high, that when the child's school speech therapist reached out to her private speech therapist to establish consistent supports across home and school, that the private speech therapist, with enthusiastic parental consent, helped the school speech therapist connect with MATP to learn more about assistive technology options for supporting their shared student as well as their students in general.

Sunny's Tablet Access
MATP connected with Sunny, a woman residing in an assisted living facility in Ingham County, through her social worker (who makes regular referrals to MATP due to tremendous past success). Sunny was experiencing difficulty accessing her tablet due to motor control and muscle strength needs with her hands. Additionally, her tablet was a very old model and she was not able to use it for all the things she wanted including: video chats, emailing, reading, and entertainment.

MATP demonstrated some mounting options (to help get a better distance and angle for access), two different updated tablets to compare paired with built in stand case options, as well as a variety of styluses. Sunny was so excited to trial the flex stylus, which can be used in several different ways. After testing out a few, she found a position that was comfortable, less fatiguing, and allowed her to be more accurate with her selections. Sunny was so excited to have better access to tablets in general, but especially to her old tablet while she's shopping for a new one, which she said she was now able to make an informed decision about purchasing after MATP showed her options to compare.
