Assistive Technology & Makers
Creating Custom Solutions, Building Independence
Our dedicated team at the Michigan Assistive Technology Program believes in the power of custom-built solutions to address unique challenges. Through maker approaches to assistive technology, we're empowering individuals to access affordable, personalized tools that enhance independence and participation.

What is the Maker Approach to AT?
The maker approach to assistive technology involves creating, adapting, or customizing devices using low-cost materials, basic tools, and techniques like 3D printing. These solutions are often developed collaboratively between individuals with disabilities, their families, makers, and AT specialists to address specific needs that mass-produced devices may not meet.
How We Fill the Gap
We fill a crucial gap by creating access to affordable assistive technology, particularly switch-adapted devices. Commercial switch-adapted devices typically come with a significant price markup, often costing hundreds of dollars more than their non-adapted counterparts.
Through maker approaches, these same adaptations can often be created for just a few dollars in materials, making customized AT solutions accessible to many more people. This is a low-cost way to create access that might otherwise be financially out of reach.
Why the Maker Approach Matters
The maker approach to AT is important because it creates customized solutions at a lower cost to the consumer. Working with makers can help encourage individuals to take charge in their own AT journeys by learning new skills and collaborating with others in the makers community for new ideas. This DIY approach also means repairs and modifications can often be done locally and quickly, rather than waiting weeks for manufacturer service.
Examples of Maker-Created AT
Our makers work on a variety of assistive technology solutions:

3D Printed Fidgets
3D-printed fidgets can come in endless shapes and textures, making them perfect for anyone needing sensory regulation. In a makerspace, these tools can be created, giving people control over their sensory needs while promoting focus, reducing anxiety, and encouraging participation in social or group activities.

Switches and Switch Adapted Devices
3D printing makes it possible to create affordable switches and switch-adapted devices. These tools can be used for everything from activating toys and appliances to gaming and communication devices.

Bottle Openers
A 3D-printed bottle opener can have larger grips, unique shapes, or adaptive handles, making it easier for people with limited hand strength, arthritis, or fine motor challenges to open bottles independently.
Success Stories
MATP provided a demo of a switch-adapted puppy dog toy to a young child, Thomas, with multiple disabilities and his family. Thomas' favorite song is "If You're Happy and You Know It," which the switch adapted puppy sang as it clapped its hands and flapped its ears. During the demo, Thomas smiled and clapped his hands, too! His parents were so excited because not only could he engage with the toy by himself with help from the external switch, but also because it was the very first time that they had seen Thomas clap his hands!
This type of adaptation, which commercially might cost $75-100 more than the standard toy, can typically be created by makers for less than $10 in parts and minimal labor.
